Inside a Vendée Globe racing yacht with Conrad Colman
6th Nov 2024
At 45,000km (25,000 nautical miles), with four ocean crossings & zero outside assistance. The Vendée Globe is one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet. Passing through Point Nemo – the furthest point at sea that’s away from land. At this point, sailors are closer to the International Space Station than land.
Ever wondered what it’s like on board a Vendée Globe racing yacht? From how to tackle tactical decisions, to the solar energy powering all his high-tech equipment, to sleeping arrangements, Vendée Globe sailor & ocean adventurer Conrad Colman gives us a tour of the boat he’s currently sailing in the Everest of the Seas.
Verso Drysuit
“When conditions get really gnarly, that requires the drysuit. I get to lock myself off in this spectacular garment. With a pair of socks on the inside and boots on the outside, you can go for days”
With its durability, comfort, and cutting-edge technology, the Gill Verso Drysuit is Conrad’s ultimate defense against the elements, a necessity for sailors facing the world's harshest oceans. Its XPLORE+® 3-layer fabric offers unparalleled waterproofness and breathability, ensuring Conrad can stay dry and comfortable through relentless storms and frigid temperatures.
The Verso System
“The Verso Salopettes are my go-to garment – I wear these more than any other jacket because when I’m inside the cockpit I don’t require a jacket.”
Conrad needs gear that can withstand the harshest conditions, and the Verso System is designed to do just that. The Verso System's waterproof and breathable fabric helps keep Conrad dry and comfortable, even when battling through relentless waves and driving rain.
The close-fitting design ensures unrestricted movement, while the adjustable features allow for a perfect fit that won't restrict movement during long stretches at the helm.
Base Layers
“The base layers form the base of everything.”
The Base Layer Top & Leggings are the essential foundation for Conrad’s layering system. The high-stretch, moisture-wicking, and quick-drying fabric ensures optimal performance in the most demanding conditions. The articulated construction and brushed interior allow for unrestricted movement and comfort, even during long hours at sea.
Offshore Boots
This boot is designed to withstand the rigors of life at sea, making it the perfect choice for sailors who demand the best. Completing the ultimate waterproof sailing system for Conrad, its 3mm thermal neoprene inner, XPLORE+® 3-layer external gaiter, and secure elastic cord offer superior warmth and waterproofness, keeping his feet dry and comfortable in the harshest conditions.
Accessories
“If I want to keep the spray out of my eyes, then I wear the ocean hat.”
The Offshore Hat is a cutting-edge piece of gear that offers Conrad unparalleled protection against the elements. Made with recycled fabrics and components, this hat embodies a commitment to sustainability without compromising performance. The XPLORE® 2-layer fabric and taped seam construction provide exceptional waterproofness and breathability.
The soft thermal fleece lining keeps the head warm and comfortable, making the Gill Offshore Hat an indispensable accessory for Conrad and sailors worldwide.
Custom Made Smock
“As soon as it gets fresh to frightening, and there’s a lot of spray coming over the top then I’m in my smock top. This plus, the (Verso) trousers work really well together. 90% of the conditions can be covered like that.
This is a spectacular garment as it’s super lightweight & super breathable.”
We designed a custom smock for Conrad specifically for use during the Vendée Globe and other ocean adventures. Utilsing the same XPLORE+ 3-layer fabric as the Verso Drysuit for unmatched waterproofness, it also features neoprene neck and wrist seals to eliminate water ingress. Conrad was looking for a garment which could keep him protected in the most brutal conditions, while allowing him to keep cool while moving around his vessel and so the custom-made smock was born.
The Vendée Globe is a grueling test of both human endurance and technological innovation. The gear that these sailors rely on is crucial to their survival and success. From high-performance drysuits to cutting-edge base layers, every piece of clothing plays a vital role in keeping them safe, warm, and dry.
We’re beyond proud to support Conrad he needs to make it through the Vendée Globe in comfort and safety. Best of luck to Conrad and all sailors racing
