What to wear for coastal walking
Posted by Gill Marine on 19th May 2021
When it came to staying healthy since the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions commenced in 2020, walking was the main activity that surged in popularity for most households, whether that be as families, couples or those on their own. Being such a low-cost activity, we hope to see people continuing their walking habits into 2021 and beyond.
As Spring is upon us and we begin to enter into the warmer months, what better to get out and see the beautiful coastal scenery than taking a hike along its coastal paths?
Whether you’re likely to encounter rain or bright sunshine, we have put together the essentials you need to keep you going all day.
Base layers
You may have read on our "what to wear when sailing" blog that layering is key to any activity!
Layering up your clothes helps to trap air against your skin as well as transporting moisture and sweat away, keeping you warm, dry and comfortable. Starting with a skin-tight, soft, quick-drying base and layering on top is a much more effective way of regulating your temperature than one thick layer.
Our baselayers come in a range of long sleeve and short sleeve designs, all constructed with a soft interior and flatlocked seams so they don’t feel uncomfortable next to your skin. Their varying degrees of thickness means you can select based on what temperature you’ll be wearing them in so you can be prepared for changeable conditions.
Our favourite baselayer pick is our Holcombe crew, available both in short and long sleeve. These innovative performance pieces constructed from PET plastic bottles are the perfect layer designed to support your clothing system from the bottom up. They are quick dry, crease resistant and easy to care for – everything you need to get going!
If it’s warm enough just to wear just a t-shirt, our UV range might be the best choice for you. Designed to perform, our UV tops are ultra-lightweight, quick-drying and, best of all they feature UV 50+ protection built into the fabric so you can remain protected from the sun all day.
Mid layers
Breathable and thermal by nature, our mid layers are there to provide warmth and promote breathability. Worn over your base layers for when the temperature begins to dip, you want to ensure that they assist in transporting moisture and sweat outwards so you remain dry and comfortable whilst walking along the trails.
Our range of fleeces and hoodies are the perfect choice for when you’re exploring the coast paths. Their thermal and stretch properties mean you can comfortably wear them over a baselayer and still be able to concentrate on your adventure.
One of our favourite mid layers is our Dart Hoodie, which provides warmth and breathability when you need it most. The interior grid structure enhances air flow, while its moisture wicking technology keeping you warm and comfortable beneath your waterproofs.
If you’re looking for something with a bit more warmth, try the Penryn Hybrid Jacket, filled with super-light ‘down-feel’ insulation, it’s the perfect combination of stretch fabric, easy care and quick-dry properties - a versatile garment for your adventure.
If it’s warm enough to have the mid layer on the outside, try our Rock Softshell Jacket , a superb technical jacket for changeable conditions. Not only does it offer 2-way stretch and hi-loft thermal lining, but it features a water repellent finish to keep you protected from the water spray and unplanned showers.
Outer layers
For those hiking in the coldest and wettest weather, your outer layers are an essential! As the final protection from the elements, you need gear that not only protects you from the rain, but wind and water spray too.
Your outer layer should be breathable, durable, comfortable and of course waterproof. Thanks to the rigorous testing we perform in the Gill lab, our wet weather gear is all of these things and more.
Our selection of lightweight waterproof jackets means you can easily tuck them away in your backpack if the weather warms up, but will maintain the highest protection when wearing them.
One of our favourite picks is our Navigator Jacket, which features breathable, waterproof and fully taped seams. Combined with thermal insulation, an inner storm guard and a rollaway hood, this jacket is incredible versatile and suitable for any conditions.
For times when you know you won’t come across rain, but you
still need protection from the cold wind, our innovative
North Hill and Whitesand Jackets made from PET plastic bottles are the perfect choice for a day’s
coastal walking.
They are extremely lightweight, crafted with a synthetic fibre insulation to
keep the warmth in and the elements out. Windproof, with a waterproof finish
also means you’ll be protected from any water spray you encounter.
Trousers/Shorts
Don’t forget, you need protection for your legs too! A good pair of trousers or shorts are key to keep you going all day, so ensure that they are lightweight and quick-drying for ultimate comfort. With varying features, from handy cargo pockets to side pockets with external drainage and adjustable ankle closures, you can be sure you’ll be protected on the coastal path.
If it’s forecast to rain, then our Pilot Trousers are a great solution to stay dry and warm. Constructed with our XPLORE 2-layer fabric construction, they are fully waterproof with adjustable ankle closures to ensure no water will enter.
If there’s sun on the cards, our UV Tec Trousers for both men and women are your best pick. Not only do they feature UV 50+ protection, but they are quick-drying, have 4-way stretch and feature a water repellent finish, so you can ensure you’re not caught out from incoming water spray.
Footwear
Good walking shoes are an absolute must!
For short walks and strolls along the coastal path, our Mawgan trainers provide a dependable grip in all conditions. Their Air-cell impact absorbing, removable insoles mean you’ll get around quickly and comfortably whilst focusing on your adventure.
(* Please note our trainers are not designed for hiking, seek advice from a specialist hiking shoe store if you are planning longer walks or hikes).
However, if you’re an avid walker and you want to go for longer hikes, a good pair of walking boots are essential. There are some excellent specialist walking shoes on the market, make sure you go for ankle support and waterproofness to ensure you’re fully protected from inevitable mud and water!
It’s also important to get the right socks to ensure you finish the day with dry and blister-free feet. Our range of socks were designed with a soft handle that feels good against the skin, whilst the elasticated arch and ankle with cushioning throughout means you can expect a comfortable stride.
Try our merino wool socks , elongated for wear with boots!

Last but certainly not least, you need a backpack to keep your valuables and gear safe and dry from the elements. Our range, made from hardwearing, tough, waterproof tarpaulin fabric with multiple compartments and pockets so you can easily access your belongings, the perfect companion to your coastal walking adventure!
